Grown, very slowly, out of the indexes at the back of old books.

Their job

Tomelings keep the lore of your world. They know Mabel has blue eyes, the bridge burned down in chapter four, and the wedding was three days ago, not five. Every fact goes on a card in one of the drawers in their shell. When something in your story stops matching, a Tomeling pulls out the card and leaves you a question.

What they love

• A detail you mentioned once in chapter two and forgot about
• Lists of names, birthdays and eye colours
• A new drawer, and a fresh blank card
• Catching a mistake before a reader does

What they can't stand

"Nobody will notice." (Somebody always notices.)

A secret

A Tomeling grows one new drawer for every story it keeps. The oldest Tomelings carry whole libraries on their backs.
